Results and real session notes

Rather than claim "proven results", here are three students’ full arcs and two actual post-session notes. Judge for yourself.

Grade 3

Building multiplication as a concept, not a table to memorize

The problem

New to multiplication and unable to grasp the abstraction of "groups of". Reciting the times table kept getting jumbled, because nothing connected the recited facts to what multiplication actually means.

What we did

Context and gameplay
Using the playground trends and games this age group already cares about — collecting cards in sets, combining pixel blocks — to turn abstract multiplication into concrete Equal Groups.
Stepwise cognition
Moving from Repeated Addition to the Array Model, so there is a visible path into multiplicative thinking.

Outcome

Not just fast recall, but the ability to explain to a parent — with a drawing and an everyday example — why 3 × 4 means three groups of four. The jump from getting the answer to actually understanding it.

Grade 4

Word problems: from guessing the operation to drawing the logic

The problem

Frozen by longer word problems. Would skip reading the question, pull out whatever numbers appeared, and guess whether to add, subtract, multiply, or divide.

What we did

Singapore CPA modelling
Bar Modeling to turn the words into a visual diagram, so "what the question is asking" becomes something you can see.
Scaffolding the reasoning
Training the habit of circling the given conditions and the unknown, then breaking one large question into a few simple logical steps.

Outcome

After three months, long word problems no longer cause panic. The child now draws the model before solving, breaks a complex problem into two or three clear steps, and can talk through the reasoning in their own words.

Grade 5

A student with ADHD: school math rating from Emerging to Proficient

The problem

ADHD traits, with sustained attention very hard to hold and strong aversion to routine drilling. The school report card had sat at Emerging in math for a long time.

What we did

Patient, game-structured sessions
No forcing a child to sit still. Practice was reframed as a challenge — rock-paper-scissors stakes, or unlocking two minutes of a game after a set number of pages — so progress came from a light agreement rather than pressure.
Many routes into attention
Continually trying and switching approaches, turning dry exercises into levels worth clearing, and extending usable focus a little at a time.

Outcome

After a year of consistent work, tolerance for math and sustained focus in session both rose substantially. On the most recent school report card, the math rating moved from Emerging to Proficient. Beyond the grade, the more important part is that he found a pace that works for him.

What a post-session note looks like

Parents get a written note after every session. Not "good session today" — what was covered, where the child broke through, and what to practise next. Both examples below are real, with identifying details removed.

Example one

Word problems and computation:
Percentage comparison word problems; building and consolidating fraction division
Coordinate geometry:
Area of triangles and parallelograms on the Cartesian plane

Complementary and supplementary angles

Fast concept uptake
After working through two worked examples, completed all the fraction division practice independently and accurately, with no prompting.
Independent derivation
Given complementary and supplementary angles as a brand-new concept, did not memorize the definitions — reasoned it out and discovered the relationship between the two independently.

Next session: a consolidation set on coordinate-geometry area, to firm up both the reasoning and the written form.

A shift toward independence
On the fraction word problems, settled down and worked through the reading and reasoning without waiting for prompts — a clear rise in initiative and confidence.
Better computational habits
Picked up simplifying before multiplying, which cut the error rate on the messier calculations considerably.

He can handle complex word problems on his own, and his confidence in math has gone up a great deal.
