Three formats

The method is identical across all three. What changes is pace, interaction, and cost. I will tell you which fits your child after the assessment.

In person, one-on-one

Full attention on one child for the whole hour

  • Held at the Brighouse or Cambie branch of Richmond Public Library
  • Standard session length 60 minutes
  • Grade 5+: 1.5 hours per session, or two 1-hour sessions per week, recommended
  • At least one fixed session per week for continuity
  • A short written progress note after every session

Children with a clearly identified gap, or who need room to think at their own pace.

In person, one-on-two

Company for the child, while the work stays their own

  • The two children do not need to be in the same grade or working on the same material
  • A separate plan for each: content built around each child’s own level, school pace, and goals
  • Within the same hour each child gets their own explanation, guidance, and step-checking, without interference
  • While one is being taught, the other works — which is itself practice at independent focus
  • Standard session length 60 minutes

Pair up with a friend you already know or a sibling — or ask, and a suitable partner can be matched by learning pace and available times.

Online

Available anywhere. The option for families outside Richmond

  • Held over Zoom
  • The student needs an iPad with a stylus, or a computer with a mouse — the work has to be written where I can see it live
  • Standard session length 60 minutes
  • A short written progress note after every session

Families elsewhere in Metro Vancouver, or with schedules that will not accommodate a fixed library slot.

On frequency

At least one fixed session per week, for continuity and results. From Grade 5 onward, as algebra and multi-step reasoning get deeper, 1.5-hour sessions or two sessions a week are recommended so there is enough time both to take problems apart and to consolidate. Sessions continue through the summer and winter breaks at the same weekly minimum; scheduling is more flexible then, and extra sessions are welcome.

Start with an assessment, then decide

Every new student begins with a one-hour thinking and skills assessment. Afterwards you get a written picture of where the gap actually is, what pace your child needs, and how sessions should be scheduled. You decide from there — and if I am not the right fit, I will say so.

Sessions and communication in English, Mandarin, or Cantonese.
